FIBER OPTIC POWER CABLE TEMPERATURE MONITORING SYSTEM

To protect the infrastructure, high safety margins are applied which can limit the efficient use of the power cable infrastructure. Real-time thermal monitoring balances the need for asset protection and network performance optimization. Distributed Temperature Sensing provides continuous monitoring of high power cable temperatures, detecting hotspots, delivering operational status, condition assessment and power circuit rating data (Real Time Thermal Rating – RTTR, Dynamic Cable Rating – DCR).

Capabilities in one fully integrated solution package. It automatically detects hotspot locations, provides alarms if critical limits are exceeded, and produces a temperature profile report. All data is stored in a central database and are available for reporting and analysis.

DTS power cable management solution combines all of these:

  • Distributed Temperature Monitoring
  • Asset Visualization
  • Alarm Management
  • Central Database
  • Reporting & Analysis Functions
  • Real Time Thermal Rating

HIGH VOLTAGE POWER CABLE MONITORING

Circuit layouts are mapped and color-coded to show the measured cable surface temperatures. Temperature graphs and hotspot tables are readily available. Sections of the cable route can be individually defined for flexible alarm levels and types.

Our DTS system, together with our proven RTTR (real time thermal rating) engine and unique SmartVision™ asset visualisation and data management software, gives you the ideal solution to monitor and protect your power infrastructure.

Key application areas include:

  • HVDC/ HVAC underground power cables
  • Power cable joints, terminations, tunnels and trenches
  • Identify offshore hazards and fault location
  • Subsea power cables and substation equipment
  • Overhead lines
  • Transformers
  • Complementary DAS (distributed acoustic sensing) to detect third-party interference (TPI) and faults

REAL TIME THERMAL RATING (RTTR) SOFTWARE

RTTR (Real Time Thermal Rating) or DCR (Dynamic Cable Rating) continuously calculates the conductor temperature by taking current load, historic load, thermal conditions and other factors into account. At the same time it predicts the maximum permissible load for steady state and emergency situations. Based on industry standards IEC 60287, IEC 60853 and finite element modeling, you can operate your network at the highest possible safe ampacity levels with excellent predictive capabilities. The RTTR calculation is based on precise thermal models reflecting the soil / ambient conditions along the high voltage power cable.

We have worked together for years with the market leader for rating software to achieve precise and reliable data. Rating results are fully integrated into AP Sensing’s SmartVision software platform and are easily

Interfaced into the operators load dispatch center via standard protocols such as Modbus TCP, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-104, DNP3 or OPC.
